Miss Oakland County 2021 - Melissa Beyrand
Melissa Beyrand is the newly crowned Miss Oakland County 2021. She participated in the Miss Oakland County Scholarship Competition on August 14, 2021, which is a closed competition to residents of Oakland County preliminary to the Miss Michigan Scholarship Competition. Melissa is originally from Milford, MI and graduated from Detroit Country Day School in 2018. She currently attends the University of Michigan College of Engineering in Ann Arbor, where she is in her senior year. Melissa is studying Biomedical Engineering and French with the goal of attending medical school to become a craniofacial reconstructive plastic surgeon.
At U of M, she is a member of the Michigan Waterski Team, with whom she recently won the 2021 Collegiate Water Ski National Championship. Music is a very important part of Melissa’s life. She is a member of the executive boards for both the Michigan Pops Orchestra and Campus Symphony Orchestra. She is also a member of Detroit’s own electro-pop violin group, Nuclassica, with whom she performs for a variety of public and private events, including weddings, corporate and holiday parties, and fundraisers. Melissa is an active volunteer with the organization Project Sunshine, where she acts as the Communications Director to coordinate volunteer events for long-term pediatric hospital patients. Melissa has also served on the board and is an active member of the University of Michigan chapter of Phi Chi Pre-Medical Fraternity.
Melissa’s Social Impact Initiative is Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.), where she promotes equity for women in these technical fields, educates young students on the amazing opportunities available through S.T.E.A.M., and advocates for performing and visual arts programs in schools. As Miss Oakland County, Melissa looks forward to speaking with students of all ages about the importance of experiential learning to refine critical thinking, enhance problem solving, and inspire curiosity. She is excited to share her own experiences with the young women of Oakland County to empower them to follow their dreams.
Jesse Cole
Jesse Cole is an author, leadership & empowerment coach, and acclaimed speaker. A former college basketball player turned educator, he is best known for his ability to weave together practical stories with transformational principles.
He is the author of 6 books, including his most recent release, “Young, Hungry, Ambitious: Imagine What Could Happen If You Decided to Be the Leader You Were Created to Be.”
Jesse has spoken at colleges such as Michigan State and Oakland University, and has conducted trainings for Teach For America, Ford Motor Company, Michigan College Access Network, Americorps, and the National Association for Student Councils.
He’s worked with groups of parents, educators & civic leaders plus has spoken to thousands of teens live. As an educator he’s served in multiple capacities. Whether it was wiping the noses of kindergarteners, cleaning lunchroom tables, moping gym floors or sustaining a $6-million-dollar student success program across 5 college campuses serving over 500 students, Jesse believes that every young leader has been given an opportunity to add value to the world. And with self-confidence and the proper guidance, they can impact their generation.
He is currently in the process of launching his non-profit agency, The Michigan Institute for Student Leadership, which will help young leaders develop a framework for leading effectively. His ultimate goal is to encourage and equip leaders to become the better version of themselves.
When he isn’t speaking and coaching he enjoys spending quality time with his wife, Shaleena, and their two children, Dean and Nya.
